A Search for Kinematic Evidence of Radial Gas Flows in Spiral Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
CO and H I velocity fields of seven nearby spiral galaxies, derived from radio-interferometric observations, are decomposed into Fourier components whose radial variation is used to search for evidence of radial gas flows. Additional information provided by optical or near-infrared isophotes is also considered, including the relationship between the morphological and kinematic position angles. To assist in interpreting the data, we present detailed modeling that demonstrates the effects of bar streaming, inflow, and a warp on the observed Fourier components. We find in all of the galaxies evidence for either elliptical streaming or a warped disk over some range in radius, with deviations from pure circular rotation at the level of ∼20–60 km s. Evidence for kinematic warps is observed in several cases well inside R25. No unambiguous evidence for radial inflows is seen in any of the seven galaxies, and we are able to place an upper limit of ∼5–10 km s (3–5% of the circular speed) on the magnitude of any radial inflow in the inner regions of NGC 4414, 5033 and 5055. We conclude that the inherent non-axisymmetry of spiral galaxies is the greatest limitation to the direct detection of radial inflows. Formation of Kinematic Subsystems in Stellar Spiral-spiral Mergers
We show that kinematically peculiar cores may be generated in stellar spiral-spiral mergers. Kinematic segregation appears as the central bulges transport orbital angular momentum inward to the center of the remnant, while the outer parts keep the spin signature of the precursor disks. The peculiar core is composed mostly of bulge material, and its size best matches that of observed peculiar co...
متن کاملConstraining the star formation histories of spiral bulges
Stellar populations in spiral bulges are investigated using the Lick system of spectral indices. Long-slit spectroscopic observations of line strengths and kinematics made along the minor axes of four spiral bulges are reported. Comparisons are made between central line strengths in spiral bulges and those in other morphological types [elliptical, spheroidal (Sph) and S0]. The bulges investigat...
متن کاملThe Star-formation Efficiency and Density of the Disks of Spiral Galaxies
For four well studied spiral galaxies (M33, M81, M100 and M101) we consider the dependencies of star formation rate (SFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE = SFR/Mgas) both on the radial distance R and on some kinematic parameters of galactic discs. To estimate SFR(R) we used a combined UV + FIR method based on the UV profiles corrected for the interstellar extinction presented by Boissier et ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Ism in the Mildly Disturbed Spiral Galaxy Ngc 4647
We present matched-resolution maps of HI and CO emission in the Virgo Cluster spiral NGC 4647. The galaxy shows a mild kinematic disturbance in which one side of the rotation curve flattens but the other side continues to rise. This kinematic asymmetry is coupled with a dramatic asymmetry in the molecular gas distribution but not in the atomic gas. An analysis of the gas column densities and th...

NGC 1313 is the most massive disk galaxy showing a flat radial abundance distribution in its interstellar gas, a behavior generally observed in magellanic and irregular galaxies. We have attempted to reproduce this flat abundance distribution using a multiphase chemical evolution model, which has been previously used successfully to depict other spiral galaxies along the Hubble morphological se...
